Residence Visa

In Panama, there are a wide variety of categories for which you can apply for a residence visa in Panama, however, the most common are:

  • Visa from specific countries that maintain friendly and professional relations with Panama;
  • Residence visa for work reasons;
  • Residency visa as an investor;
  • Student visa;
  • Permanent resident dependent visa.

Depending on your specific situation, we will advise you to determine which visa category is most suitable for you to regularize your immigration status in Panama. For the most part, residence permits will be granted for two (2) years. Once the two (2) years have expired, you can apply for a permanent residence permit.

Additionally, you should take into account that, if your reasons are for work, in addition to the residence visa, you must also apply for a work permit to the Ministry of Labor simultaneously.

Requirements - Residency

The requirements to apply for a residence visa will change depending on the category to be used, however, the main requirements are:

  • Have a passport valid for a minimum of six (6) months;
  • Five (5) passport-size photos;
  • Criminal record from your country of residence or origin valid for six (6) months. If the criminal record is in a language other than Spanish, it must be translated by an authorized public translator in Panama;
  • Health certificate issued by a qualified doctor in the Republic of Panama;
  • Proof of address in the Republic of Panama.

Process - Residency

The steps to obtain your residence visa are:

  • Register the passport with the National Migration Service;
  • Apply for a residence permit to the National Migration Service, submitting the corresponding documentation;
  • Acquire temporary residence identification, which is valid for six months, while the application is being analyzed;
  • Withdraw resolution and card approving your residence permit.

Additionally, you should take into account that the processes to apply for a residence permit must be done through a lawyer in the Republic of Panama, with the exception of a student visa.

The time it takes to apply for and obtain your residence visa in Panama is approximately six (6) months.
